Default Thoughts on my Rover 75

Hi there

I just joined the club. I have a 75, Wedgwood blue 75 CDT. Absolutely love it but a coming to realise it needs some attention and am interested in hearing others members thoughts.

First drove a 75 in 2002 (a hire car) when I got married in Scotland. Loved it. The shape and feel etc. After 10 years of marriage, three children and a dog and now living in Glasgow have been given a CDT in the same colour. Bodywork superb and still looks and drives great for a 15 year old car.

It was laid up for a while and still looks better than most cars on the road. Things have started to go wrong though....now the starter has packed in and the central locking and electrics are starting to play up.

I don't have the time and experience to fix things myself. I'm prepared to spend some money getting it up and running properly. Am I doing the right thing? I hope so. Any thoughts?

Hi and welcome to the club from sunny Kilwinning

Have a look through the technical help forum and the How to forums, lots of good advice there.
Knowing the amount of rain that's fallen here it may be worth your while looking here as some electric issues can be caused by water affecting the ecu

Hello Jim, lots of similar threads of late. Personally, I'm always going to own a 75, so I pay for repairs to the one I have at the moment. Every repair adds to it's reliability, and so it's longevity. The car isn't on finance so the cash is usually available, (a used car on finance is risky because of that unexpected repair bill.)

Hi Jim & welcome to the forum.

It’s great place to find out everything about running a 75.

We’ve been running a 75 since 2002 with the purchase of a new Diesel Connoisseur. I added a second one, a 2.5 V6 Connoisseur 8 years later and still run it as a second car.

Last year I purchased yet another V6, this time a fully loaded Connoisseur SE which I am restoring and will eventually replace my current V6

In my time of ownership the main problems I’ve experienced have not been electrical but mechanical and by that I mean suspension. These cars are very prone to suffering broken springs, both front and rear and front drop links failing. On top of that corrosion on the suspension parts and brake pipes are another issue.

You mention electrical problems including starter problems. To be honest I’ve never had to replace any starter motor but I did have to replace the alternator on the diesel.
Door mirror adjustment can give trouble but this is usually fixed with cleaning the contacts on the door switches particularly on the drivers side.

By reading through the various topics I’m sure you’ll eventually find your way to improving your 75 ownership as yes indeed they are lovely cars.

I recently ran a Jaguar XF and often compared it to the 75 with it coming on top of the Jag on several points like seating comfort to name just one.

That could be a cheap easy fix. This forum pointed me to the starter solenoid contacts when my starter began only wanting to work intermittently. I got a kit for about £16 off an ebay specialist seller which cured the problem completely and my ZT now starts on first turn of the key every time. The starter motors themselves on our cars are actually very robust and long-lasting - just the solenoid contacts wear out.

I'm not sure r.e the CDT starter - however my 1.8t wouldn't start yesterday after putting some fuel in - just due to a bad electrical contact, i cleaned the contacts on the starter with some sandpaper and all Good took 2 mins
