Default Rover 25 1.6 Ixl

Hi,

I'm looking at a rover 25 ixl with about 73000 miles.

Just curious if there's anything I need to be aware of before I leap into it.

It says automatic works really good, ac works, sunroof works remote works, engine is mooth. Body looks clean and no rusts.

I intend to go view this weekend.

So words of wisdom and advice will be appreciated.

cvt gearbox not very reliable check if it snatches ito gear and if the flex plate rattles.
check for head gasket failure...not the end of the world but use as a huge bargaining tool

Check the tailgate wiring where it goes from hatchback into the body for chafing. Shorts there can give all sorts of weird electrical gremlins from alarm problems to lighting and locking mishaps.

Also check the rear wash wipe is working. If it doesn't chances are the flexible pipe has snapped in the tailgate. Not expensive to fix though.

I had the 1.8. Version - and it went like stink ! Really gave some BMW's and AUDI's a shock away from the lights ....

Auto box worked well and I changed the gear box oil at about 60,000.

Head gasket went at about 70,000 and I gave it to my nephew as a project car, as I needed a bigger 4 door car - a 45 diesel.

Default Rover 25

I've had two Rover 25's at different times - one of the original early types and a late facelift. They were both 1.6's with the CVT auto box. When they're working they go very well and I liked the CVT box - it's intriguing to watch the rev counter continuously falling as you accelerate faster. Unfortunately both of mine suffered HGF despite regular and careful servicing and they both suffered the same gearbox fault - there's a particular bearing that fails anytime from 60K miles onwards and the repair the second time was £900.

These days all cars go the same way with autos... No real torque converter - wet clutches that slip to save fuel.

I'm not a fan so stick with older clunkier boxes !
