Default Steering wheel I/R controls to Kenwood

I have a ZT with the standard Kenwood radio. The steering wheel controls have never worked since I bought the car about 18 months ago. Have read up the posts on here and popped out the I/R sender in the eyebrow. It was fitted correctly but I took it out and held it against the receiver on the radio faceplate but still nothing worked. I have read that the rotary coupler on the steering wheel can be a fault, but the horn works fine as does the factory fitted cruise control. Also read there is a box behind the radio from which the I/R sender comes, so is that the only other possibility? Any advice gratefully received.

Most mobiles can photograph/video IR light.

Worth a go to see if the LED is showing anything.
