I've been after a caravan for ages but she's not keen but is warming round to the idea.
Problem is that I have absolutely no idea what they're worth, or how to gauge whats a good deal.
I couldn't tell the difference between a £1500 van and a £5,000 van

Have a look at http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/articles/view.asp?id=10 - very useful!
And - buy a damp meter and go round all the walls (especially where they join the roof) with it.

Depends on your budget,as Rod says, buy a damp meter, that is the most important think to look at on a caravan, also smell,if there are loads of air fresheners in it ,why?, could be used to disguise the smell of damp.Next make sure all the electrics work, and the gas appliances, ask for service history,if its up to date, then the gas and electrics will have been tested during the last service.(should have been) A service every 2 years is acceptable, unless the van has been used constantly, then annually is best.
You will tell if its been looked after,go for a popular brand ,eg Swift,Bailey,Lunar,Sterling etc. Have a look for a used caravan price guide ,online or buy a book here's another, similar to the one Rod sent you.

There is no difference ..... they're all congestion causers.

Best sign I've seen on the back of a caravan:-
"I apologise for driving so close to the front of your car"

Best one I saw?
"Adventure before dementia"
That takes some beating

As an ex-caravanner, can I remind the non-towers, that towed caravans are subject to speed limits 10 mph less than cars on 60 and 70 mph roads ?
This is responsible for that caravan at the head of the queue.
