Another faulty Maf

In less than a year I have gone through 3 faulty genuine bosch maf's.

The current one has lasted less than 5 months, a recent t4 session identified a a faulty air flow sensor, lifting the bonnet and it was disconnected, plugging it back in, a used one and then a brand new item did not cure the problem.

So today I disconnected the maf and took the car for a run and it ran perfectly, no bogging down or a flat spot, it was also noticeably down on mpg.

A call to euro for another replacement on Monday I will now have to make.

I sometimes wonder if quality was something we had back in the day......

You haven't got a "performance" air filter have you? 3 mafs in 1 year is not normal. Something is causing them to fail, you need to find the cause.

The first 2 were faulty straight out of the box, the original lasted 16 years before failing.

That still doesn’t sound right to me to be honest, the maf sensors will be fully tested before Bosch ship them. There can be multiple issues with the car that can make the maf readings look as if they have failed. I’d say you still need further investigation.

Hi Dave. As Jamie asks, have you got a performance filter fitted? If you have one where you have to spray some oil on, the oil may have affected the maf. On the other hand, is there no one else who sells the maf? Try DMGRS. They have two to chose from. I would personally give them a call and ask Mat about the difference. I have found him quite good for advice in the past. Plus you will get the guarantee. A no questions asked guarantee.

I am presuming you are getting your MAF sensors from Euro carparts.
If so have you tried these below.

When you disconnect the MAF the EGR operation is disabled, so a sticking EGR will disappear with the MAF unplugged.

Try unplugging the EGR actuator and see if things improve.

No performance air filter Dave, just a very clean standard one.

The story behind the mafs , the first one was faulty straight out of the box, a sticker with a serial number on was on the box and a link to confirm with bosch that it was genuine, apparently it wasn't and bosch advised me to return it from where I bought it and they would contact them.

The second one was from ecp, the link was put up on a post back in March when it looked like they had got the price wrong, when it arrived it was obvious that it had been a return from another customer, it also didnt work in my car.
A phone call to ecp and a new one was sent out and was duly fitted, the car ran fine until September time when it started to bog down between 40-50 mph, it also behaved as tho it was misfiring.

I took Mike's advice and reconnected the maf and pulled the vac pipe off the egr, a bit of a surprise but the car appears to be running ok, my trip to work in the morning will be the real test , so Thankyou Mike.

A look inside the egr and theres just a layer of carbon dust in there, nothing to worry about, I suppose it could be seized as the last time I cleaned it I had trouble getting the plunger to move.

Check the vacuum hoses, from the EGR, maybe also fit a gutted EGR or a bypass one.
