Anything from £300 to £2000 depending on age and spec.

Not much!
If its just a gasket then I'm with David, £350ish, maybe a bit more depending on spec. You could raise that value if it is a recent year. If the repair was uneconomical in the trade, what would it be worth to scrap? But you state that the engine has overheated several times, so possibly a warped head, maybe damage to the block? You might be looking at a replacement engine Of course if it's cheap enough and you have the time..... |

Thanks Chaps..
Phil, Its a silver mk1 53 plate ZT 1.8T...low spec...first owner loved and cherished it...second owner is a rep...its sound but needs a lot of tlc...no real damage though just grubby. I am guessing it needs the Fan resistor upgrade and new head gasket and skim....the risk is whether the engine has suffered terminal damage...Im willing to give it a go...it still runs but overheats very quickly.

Plenty of engines out there, if you swap it yourself. Could be an economical approach to a good car if the price is right, of course.

I am genuinlely excited at the prospect of an engine out rebuild....Id love to get the spanners out this summer and maybe run a series of 'how to' photos for 1.8 owners.
I havent yet bought the car, it will be a week before the chap returns from his hols. It just has to be the right price in case the egine is ruined...its a risk...but at worst I can always source another motor.
