Default CDT struggled to start for weeks, now died and wont start.

Wondering if anyone could help; my dads 75 CDT has been struggling to start for the past few weeks (sometimes taking 30 seconds to crank over) however has appeared to drive fine. Today going to work after just over 30 miles into the journey it died, was recovered home by the AA and wont start at all now, just keeps cranking. AA gave a few error messages "glow plug unit faulty 13573" (i cant see how it would randomly die from that) and "4496 rail pressure monitoring and 7680 CAN message fault."

Was wondering if anyone could help as after going some research there seems to be limitless possibilities as to what it could actually be...

It won't be the glow plugs but could be injector problems on start up. Poor spray pattern which is not such a problem when, as you say, it runs OK but makes start up difficult.

Okay sort of what I was thinking, thanks for the quick response.

What do you reckon is more likely, dirty injectors or faulty such as leaking ones?

High pressure fuel pump regulator O ring.
Out of spec injectors,
Failed low pressure fuel pump, do you have a underbonnet pump and in tank or a single pump later model?
Could also be a fault in the ECU I have seen that on another members car, appeared to be a low pressure fuel pump fault.

Its the earlier two pump model, apparently the AA guy tested both pumps and they seemed to be fine, I'm thinking Ill have to see what the O Rings are like on the pressure regulator or maybe do a leak back test on the injectors.

Have you checked the plenums?
You could have a swimming ecu, and they don't like that

Last time they were checked was early summer to change the pollen filter which hadn't been changed in years. They were blocked then but I spent some time unblocking them so hopefully theyre not blocked again.

Hi mate, as you’re only local to me in Canterbury I could pop over with my T4 and check it over for you probably give you an accurate diagnosis of what’s actually wrong with it, if that’s of some help to you just drop me a PM

I had the same or very similar problem, It turned out to be the small "O" ring on the HP regulator.
