Default Had enough, now want rid

Well I think my Rover ownership is finally coming to an end. It's been squeaking for the last fortnight and last night it finally threw the ancillary belt off (though it was then much quieter!) Perversely, switching on the FBH and then climate control to max heat allowed me to nurse it the few miles home without overheating, though Torque did show it rise to 96degC once or twice on the uphill stretch.

Today I got it onto ramps after it had stopped raining and removed the undertray which was another to-do job as some of the screw things had fallen out and it was rubbing across speed bumps and the like. Looks like the belt hasn't snapped and it doesn't even look to be in bad condition, though with my fat fingers and the limited room available I couldn't reach to check for play in any of the pulleys except the idler, which certainly feels dry and noisy so is most likely the culprit.

Normally such a trivial thing would get fixed and that'd be that, but in the last year it's been death by a thousand cuts and every other month something would go wrong requiring time off the road to be repaired and the subsequent cost of switching insurance and road tax to my little Dacia. I vowed last time that next time it broke down I'd be replacing rather than fixing, but it only needed it to last until the end of August - if repaired I can't even trust that it will do that. The only problem is what can I replace it with that's big, capable of pulling a caravan, and doesn't have a litany of expensive problems of it's own? Not much it seems, though I've narrowed it down to something like a 2008/9 Kia Sedona or a Mondeo TDCI, and both would be automatic because most cars now seem to mandate a DMF change as a service item along with the clutch!

Thoughts? I know I should just pay the £30 for a new idler and fix it, hoping that it won't break down again but I've done that too many times already and each time it spitefully proves me wrong, besides which I can't keep throwing money at a 16yr old car.

I normally work on the basis that the cost of keeping an older car on the road is pretty much always negated by the depreciation in value of a newer car and as you have already mentioned what will you replace it with that isn't significantly expensive? Unfortunately with cars of the 75's age there is always likely to be a long "to be done" list but they do repay with the amount of smiles per mile they give you, it's just harder to remember that when they throw a wobbly as it's always at the worst possible time to rub it in.

But you would be more than willing to throw money at a 10 year old car ?

For the love of god please don't have a 2007+ Mondeo, not unless you like the idea of doing an emergency stop the moment you even look at the brake pedal.

Plus changing the belts on one would cost close to a grand.

Also the mk4 mondeo 2lt tdci is know for turbo failure 70-100k mine went at 75k at 6yrs old cost over £1100 to fix ! And it was my bosses ex company car so fsh with it .

So no guarantee a newer motor will be trouble free.

Trust me Darren, there's not a single car on the market that doesn't have model specific problems. Might be worth talking to a specialist of any particular vehicle, asking what they suffer from, before making any decisions.

Underbody corrosion, head gaskets, DMF's, clutch hydraulics, electronics that fail far too early or give random issues, central locking, instrument packs, seized injectors.... the list goes on. The 75 diesel is actually probably one of the better cars and at least there is this great forum with pretty much every fix detailed somewhere

Better the devil you know

Think my sisters ford mundaneo is about the same year.

Have to say it's not as nice as my mgzt to drive and the quality of the thing leaves a lot to be desired.

The buttons on the center console for example are painted on, and look worn and tatty. So much so that the paint on the button for the window demister has worn away to a red blob, and if you didn't already know what the button was for, it would be anybody guess as to what it was!

A truly cheaply put together car, in true ford tradition dating back to the money saving corner cutting of the original modal T!

On the plus side, it is still a better car than that hideous vauxhall vecra she owned before it!

Never driven or seen a more duller car in my life than that vecra !

Lol! Just pay the £30 and see what happens. You never know you might then get a couple of months breakdown ( but not worry ) free driving.
