I made a start on dismantling a M47 engine today which was kindly given to me by Ade I/we are hoping to find out why it would not start after a crank pulley change last year.

Exchange engine started right away, everything was swapped and changed over on this engine, crank sensor, cam sensor, regulator, maf, T4 pointed to crank sensor ? but no.

I think Brian may remember this engine as we spoke about it and he also said it is only the second one he as heard of not starting after a crank pulley change.

Having no heat in the cabin is certainly not much fun in this cold weather is it Bri, my left side vent still blows cold air.

Hi Scott & David.
I am not attempting to get the engine up and running again as to may components are missing, I am removing what would be useful at the same time trying to find the cause of the none starting, which I think I found today after removing the cam shafts.

Two of the rocker arms have split/cracked/smashed, as to why I don't know yet, but it happened after the car had the crank pulley changed, few photo's below I spoke to Brian about this at the time, hopefully he may have an idea.

Note the cup split open and smashed apart.

Next to a good rocker arm.

Layed out on the table.

Reverse of the rocker arms, good one being pointed to.

Also tested my aviation tensioner spanner

My thoughts as to what happened to this engine..........

The crank pulley was removed and installed with a rattle gun, and this has disturbed the lower timing chain guide, leading to the timing being lost shortly afterwards.

When the valves came into contact with the pistons, this is when the rockers were damaged.

When the head is removed all will become apparent

This particular engine, and by that I mean the M47R, has three different thicknesses of head gasket, according to tolerances, including head skims, and the pistons actually protrude through the gasket fire rings, and the clearance to the valves is minimal.

I look forward to the next part of the stripdown.

That photo says it all Steve - the upper timing chain appears to have lost its tension, unless you have already removed the HP pump.

If you have then, as long as the crankshaft is in one piece, I think Brian is spot on.
