Default 1.8T taking ages to warm up...

...I know it's cold at the moment, but my newly acquired 1.8T tourer is takes an age to warm up, with the needle only creeping to to 1/4 at best and the heaters not working to well either.

Does this indicate a stuck thermostat?

No emulsion in the oil, so I'm hoping no head gasket problems.

thanks

Tim

Check if it has a PRT (Pressure Relief Thermostat).
The simplest way to know is the presence of a wide bore T-piece in the middle of the upper head-radiator hose. If so, then the stat is mounted under the radiator, meaning the front end must be lifted to access the under panel and the PRT.

Easy to replace, but a full drain down is required.
Stats don't usually stick open as such. The PRT tends to fail due to swelling of the rubber coating on the valve, which can wedge it open when it should be closed. If this is your case, then examine it carefully to see why it deteriorated. Oil contamination is typically involved.

If you don't have a PRT then it's a more complex job accessing the stat housing behind the head. Again, examine the failed stat to check for a possible cause.

MPG is shockingly awful, so I’m hoping that’s what it is.

Thanks
