Default is it a wheel bearing????

evening all , i have a strange noise which i thought was a wheel bearing , it sounds like a continous whirring noise , it starts at 25 mph and does not get louder or quicker with speed , i have checked all 4 corners and nothing , my friendly garageman moted the car and couldnt find it , i left it with him and he test drove it and said it sounds like a wheel bearing , he then removed all the pads and spun the whhels and could find nothing , it doesnt change note when cornering, braking or accelarating , could it be a bush or something else , any comments welcomed(apart from stupid ones) as it is getting irratating

do the following test, drive to 50/60mph,knock it in to neutral, then turn the wheel from side to side, providing theres no other traffic of course,if it appears when you turn, that is usually a sign of worn bearing.

I had a similar problem of a strange noise, turned out to be one of the rear suspension lower arm plastic shields that had slid outwards and was rubbing the inside of the wheel!!

hi , as i said this is no change in the noise level when braking , accelarating , coasting , steering or anything , it starts and stops at 25 mph and any speed above this is a constant noise

Very often on our cars its a tyre noise, not a bearing (esp with low profile tyres).

Do you have cheap tyres on the rear?

Starts and stops at 25 mph? ..... how strange!

If it was my 1963 Spitfire I would have checked out the speedo cable / mechanism lubrication but that probably doesn't apply here!

Can you say from which direction you think the whirring is coming from?

Otherwise, like Jakg suggests, check tyres (although MOT man should have spotted any damage etc there)

Good luck

John

I've had some very noisy cheapo tyres - one sounded very much like a wheel bearing.

it sounds like its coming from the rear , the reason i say this is it makes no difference when steering and it is a little bit noisier if you drive with the back seats down , during the mot he said it had good tyres all round but i think i will check them tomorrow and maybe swap them front to back and see if that changes anything

Hi cbr1100xx
I had something very similar to that a few years ago. Changed the wheelbearing OSR because thats exactly what it sounded like.Noise continued so investigated further and found the brake caliper piston was sticky, seals all the worse for wear.Changed the caliper and sanity was resumed after months of rhythmic squeals.
Hopefully giving you an insight into a possible cause?

I'd go for a tyre noise.---

PS. I've got a CB 1,000 R'
