Has anyone managed to do this?

I've lost count of how many different formats I've downloaded and tried but cant for the life of me get anything other than the pre installed POI's to work

It would help to know what navigation (GPS) software you are talking about?
If it is IGO, the subject has been described in one of the topics further down the list.

This is what I do:

- Download KML files or convert any other POI file to KML
- Save KML downloads to your PC
- Copy all saved KML files to igo8/content/userdata/poi
(Create userdata folder and poi folder under it if you can't find them on your unit.)
