Default Reliable OBD2 Adaptor Recommendation

I have got an ELM 327 bluetooth adaptor that is connected to by Torque but will then not recognise the protocol and so doesn't communicate with the ECU. I want to get it working as the Engine Management light is currently on and I would like to check the codes and do the repair myself rather than taking it to the garage. Does anyone have an adaptor that they know works well? Car is 2.5 V6 190 and Torque is running on Navall Star

You would probably get a much faster response if you PM'd one of the forum experts on the cars electronics.---
