Yes I thought that too. The 'tinny' noise sounds like something at relatively high speed to me. I think the alternator runs faster than the other components (?), so it would be a good candidate. Maybe the previous incorrect belt fitting has put undue stress on it - or whatever is making the noise.

Would a T4 pick anything up?

Or do I need a. Potential new alternator?

Or worse still do a 3 belt + water pump again?!!!

Hi T-Cut, it would make sense, hope so for Waynes sake. It would be alot easier changing the alternator than the idler wheel.

I have listened to Wayne's video a-dozen times now, I'm beginning to think it does sound similar to mine, I deleted my Youtube video a few days ago, I will have to post it up again.

Dorsetbob has heard my whirring whining noise. Hey Bob! what do you think about the two noises?

Wayne, as for your fan not working, you need to get one of Artics refurbished fans with new bushes fitted, or one of Jules new units.

Those photos you posted up on other thread regarding your boot leak, it looks like your rear light gaskets are at fault.

Cheers Wes!

As u know - with the increasing number of issues cropping up on my car - I may have to prioritise what I can do as cost is mounting already

1. Fan is priority now.
So Steve (Arctic) has kindly offered to supply + fit a refurb 2 speed fan with gold resistor (more longer lasting than a 3 speed one) this Sunday
Shannon tubes rotted - but Arctic to the rescue again on Sunday

2. That engine whine is a big concern - but worried its big costs too - so will see....but prefer it to be looked at asap!

3. Boot leak
Have ordered rear light seals from Jezza but no reply
So may make some myself ...

4. Driver and passenger window rattle - but holding the pull up door lock knob - its stops rattling - so maybe need to take door card apart and refit ...

5. Breather tubes and track rod ends needs replacing as is auto gear box oil - undecided who to do these yet...

6. Stinky air con
Have ordered air con desanitizer foam and I will inject foam in air con tube in footwell

7. Missing jacking pad
EBay selling at £7 - expensive?

Wayne, you are not alone, there is most certainly a similar pattern to these 75's and MG ZT's.

We all seem to go down the same root when buying these old motors, I should be getting my aux idler and tensioner sorted next week, cant wait.

I also had same problem with my fan, and without the help and support from these wonderful members, it would have most certainly taken me alot longer to fix and make the repair... So don't give up Wayne.

Artic is now on my speed-dial.

... and without SD1too keeping on to me to strip the front of my ZT, I would have taken her into a garage and most probably paid hundreds.

But Its only day 5 of ownership

And I paid above my budget for MG hoping at least the big cost belts/pump was sorted - now it may not be so....

If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for her. Did you buy from a garage/trader or privately?

Don't feel you have to answer.

Do you have Econ selected on the climate control, or is it set on Auto.

If the air con is operating, but the refrigerant/oil mix is low, that may also cause an unpleasant noise from the compressor.

Other thing to check is power steering fluid, although that's obviously more prominent when turning.
