Also am I right in thinking the 2 jubilee clips are for securing the hose back onto the engine block and the 2nd jubilee clip for secure the thermostat inside the hose?

Thanks in advance. I will take pics and create a guide after this as there's so much chit chat about it its tricky to find the info
No need to grind anything off; that's why you need silicon grease and a short length of household waste pipe - so you can tap it home without hitting the bulb.

The hose reduces in diameter further down, so you don't really need the second clip

I gently, and very carefully used a junior hacksaw, until I got a slight nick at the edge of the ring. Strong wire cutters, or tin snips, snipped it back a little further, then peeled it back like a tin of corned beef, with pliers.

It would be very easy to damage the hose (just as it would with a Dremmel) so work slowly

.........and I didnt use the second clip either, was concerned it would chafe the hose. So far it doesnt seem to have moved

Would this not be more effective if it was in the other end of the hose nearer the engine ?

It's just a question, i have no idea where the other end of the hose goes to. For all i know it could go right round to the oem stat.

I ask because I can't see how the hot water (88°c) can get to the thermostat to open it in time.
There is no flow of coolant there, only heat dissipation which means hoter than 88°c water is needed to heat the water to 88°c near the thermostat. There must be some really hot spots in the engine before the thermostat opens.

Does that make sense ?

I don' think I will ever do this "modification" I don't like it.
"Does that make sense"? No it doesn't

The idea of fitting the extra thermostat to the diesels was mine and I fitted
the first (one in an Aluminium housing) three and a half years ago with no
problems since. As mods go it is easy, cheap, reliable, and easy to return to original spec should you wish to. (£20 for a new top hose)

The top hose is tapered and the new thermostat is already fitted in the engine end, the other end is too small.

What worries me is that there is no flow of coolant near this thermostat, the only way the thermostat is going to open is when the water near it reaches 88 degrees by heat dissipation, for that water to reach 88 degrees surely the engine must get really hot ?

My car sits between 75 and 78 degrees, it's not really hot enough and I might try this but I have to convince myself first.
