Default Idler bolt size

Doing the belts (or trying) but stuck at the moment as I can't find a suitable tool for the auxiliary idler. Could someone please tell me the size of the bolt? I've got some large torx on 1/2" sockets but there's no room, need perhaps a 3/8?

Regards

there are about 3 sizes of these that i have come across. some even have bolts in now as mat is supplying. very tight to get at in situ with the torx type. i ordered a torx bit from ebay specially to do this as i could not get a ratchet in there. i had to use the torx in my molegrips. i now have a bolt that can be removed with a spanner on mine. the torx on the steering pump pulleys are as soft as ... you know what, so they have now been changed for bolts. the bolts that hold the door servo motors on the doors , (the ones that can be accessed from the outside ) are exactly the correct thread and length for this job, for anyone interested. ...

mine was ordered from that same photo and arrived with a bolt. check with mat if he has the bolt type first . you might have the torx type delivered, which at least will give you the option of getting the correct size torx , but can you get in to tighten it ? ...

Thanks, eBay isn't a popular option anymore with excessive postal charges and import fees. I've been able to borrow a free standing tool from my ex-MG/Rover friend but been unable to get hold of him. Was hoping that someone might know the size so I could hunt locally, but will ask Mat if he knows as I bought all the bits from him.

Regards

It's a Torx 55 Mike and you're right about the access. I bought a stubby Snap-On bit 3/8 in. drive. I hope this is the answer you're looking for.

Perfect, thanks Simon. Will go out hunting tomorrow. Your description matches the one I was previously able to borrow.

Bit jealous now as my new idler, also from Mat, didn't come with a bolt (?). Still I've located a 3/8" kit (incl. T55) at the local farm shop which I reckon will do the job with just a bit of adjustment: I need to cut/grind about 3mm off either the socket or ideally the punched out base of the Torx which will at least get the bolt moving.

Could they have been from different aftermarket manufacturers Stefan? The Torx 55 was the original factory fitment on my engine.
