First check is low speed fan, heating off, engine on then press demist button and check if radiator fan working (see through grille) if not, with engine off, look through grille for a silver or gold resistor at 2 o'clock position on cowling. If no resistor change for used later 2 speed fan with gold resistor or see Jules shop for new replacements.

You also said car limped home and temp 118 low speed fan cuts in at 104 and high speed at 112 - anything over 115 is bad news for a 1.8.

Default oil in water!!!

Oh sorry about the misunderstanding,..when I said limped home..The wife just drove real slow...the engine warning light came on (the orange one) and she said there was a hot water smell...I have since removed the header tank..thoroughly cleaned it of oil(about an egg cup full)refitted it and very slowly topped it up again...started the car with the digital temp code..and went for a spin ,with the heater on full blast(working well). It drove fine, temp was 88..max to 92 for a 15 min drive, turned heater right down, and the temp stayed at 91-93 at idle for 5 mins,no problem. But the warning light still hasnt gone out,and when I took the oil filler off when car was idling it was kinda smokey then settled ..then another puff off vapourish smoke..exaust smelling ...car ran smooth but at exhaust end sounded like it was hunting abit.....its only done 82,000 and drives realy nice, what could these symtms be.??Thank you.

On the 1.8 engine, there's only one way to get engine oil into the cooling system. I think you've already guessed how.

ok HGF,I only need the car for another month or 2,(got my eye on a TD 75 ).Will putting K seal in it help ,or because its oil in the water prevent it doing its magic?? I'm only looking for a quick bodge until I get my td 75,then I can take the head of and change the HG propery.

No, don't use K-Seal, it can block the narrow passages and from what I read is a pain to get rid of when you come to do the job properly.

If you must use a sealer use Steel Seal

Default oil in water!!!

so this "steel seal" will work with oil getting through to the header tank?will it block the HG hole on the water side so the oil doesnt get through?
