Hornby is still the one with greater detail and realism since moving to China and redesigning lots of the locomotives IMHO if using "OO" gauge.
You can save a lot of money purchasing on line to from such Companies as http://www.hattons.co.uk/ buying individual now often cheaper than sets to.
If you don't use digital you cannot run 2 trains on one track you would need 2 complete circuits of tracks with a controller for each for that.
Bachman also make good products, at the end of the day it depends what you want and who makes the relevant engines etc you want.
the couplings on the two makes are not compatible either.
I use several manufacturers and make white metal kits of Engines.
Most track is now nickel silver so is fine for outside use to.

The newer Bachmann stuff matches the latest Hornby for detail I think. All the recent products from either company make me worry how to get them out of the box without damaging the detail.

Dont have any problems when I run both Hornby and Bachmann kit together, John. Where do you find the problem ??

Garden Railway brilliant idea John. Have you actually tried it ??

Have long wanted too but never found the time. Giving a lot of thought recently to compressing my working week into four days and spending one day a week on the railway thing next Spring. Might just achieve something like that.

Yes at my last place I had a full Garden 4 Line, system running.
Haven't set it all up here yet as it is a massive job.
I found Bachman Couplings sometimes did on certain make points come apart.
No problem now as I wire them together with mini chain.
I was fitting lighting in all the coaches and on tables, now some are done as standard!
Running a couple of Hundred feet straight lines in either direction takes loads of track to.
I do a bit with my neighbour who has all 3 Gauges in Garden, OO, O and 7" real coal fired sit on and ride, great fun.

....and of course the real thing (in minature) on the Ffestiniog Railway.

Oh, and it goes without saying, keep the boxes they come in.

I had a selection of Hornby stuff from the mid 70's, that came out of an old shop that i was given in 1986 and made quite a decent layout in the attic.
When we moved to a smaller house in 2000, i was in hospital, and i very nearly went back in when I discovered that my parents had packed up the layout, (using bubble wrap at least) and decided that we did not need "all those boxes" and threw them all out.

40 mint boxes, not one marked or damaged in any way.

I sold the layout to a collector as a job lot for a lot less than I would have got had they been boxed.

They were talking on Radio 2 last week about certain hobbies having a fine line drawn between them being a Hobby or a Mental illness

Made me chuckle a bit, but I do understand....... honest as my Father and Brother were both train spotters way back.
I still have loads of old Hornby metal 3 Rail in the loft somewhere with rolling stock.

Is it valuable? No boxes though
Glad we had the use of it though in our child hood rather than it be all sealed up in boxes unused.

I changed all mine for KaDee. Superb for 'handsfree' coupling and uncoupling, especially when shunting a yard.

Using the electromagnetic uncouplers ensures no un-scripted uncouplings as well.

About 30 years ago my brother-in-law and myself pooled our Hornby 3 rail and Meccano. He had the Hornby and I had the Meccano. I think he probably had the best fincancial deal but I got the best long term enjoyment.

What's all this digital control? 2 engines running independantly on one track, good heavens, things have changed.
