But that's exactly what it would be doing if it switched to Econ mode. Econ mode means compressor disengaged, which means no air cooling taking place, so no cabin cooling.

I think perhaps there's some confusion between "Econ" mode and the "Recirculation" function.

TOM, are you sure it's reverting to "Econ" and not "Recirculation" mode?

In these circumstances what does the control unit do? It selects ‘recirculating’ mode.

I’ve carried out a study of the ATC system in various conditions and I’m in no doubt that some degree of manual control is preferable most of the time.

Manual control?...How many times do i hear that...These days...Bah...

In ‘Econ’ mode the compressor is disabled isn’t it Mick. Surely that means that there is no air conditioning.

Hi Cliff,
Just been out and checked again, when I switch on Auto (aircon on) the temp goes up to 16 on both sides and recirculation is switched off.
If I switch the temp to Lo on one or both sides auto switches off, recirculation switches on and the fan goes to maximum speed but econ does not appear on the screen.
Regards
Tom.

In which case, I think it's all working just as it should

Cheers,

when you drop down to under 16 doesn't it go into the maximum cooling mode and blows you back into the seat while it slowly freezes your eyeballs?

It makes sense that it will switch to recirculating when you switch to 'LO', as the system will be able to keep taking more heat out of the same air, and further reduce the cabin temperature. It took me a while to work out that 'ECON' couldn't cool the cabin below outside air temp. I thought my car was fitted with a magic 2-speed compressor!
