Morning, bad luck with the camera Jeff. Unless something is waterproof to the point it can be used underwater heavy enough rain will find any weak spot. Hope it fires up ok.

In the rain my camera (which is weather sealed) decided enough was enough and the rear screen decided to flicker then go off

We had to stop the photo shoot anyway as it was chucking it down.
I stripped the camera down in the car and put the heating on and drove home.

Camera has spent the night with all seals open laying over a bowl of dried rice in the airing cupboard.

I hope it is okay as I'm out all next week working and if still not working it will be off to Colchester Camera Repair and see if I can hire a loan camera body in the meanwhile

If I had known a couple of months back that I was going full time as a professional photographer I wouldn't have sold my other camera body.
Either way, this tells me now that I do need to have a back up body should this happen again as my camera is no longer my hobby thing, it is my tool to earn me a living!

I'll let you all know if the camera is working a bit later, want to give it as much time as possible to dry out before trying to power it up again.
Would an hairdryer do the job Jeff, just a thought .

Blimey Rich, You run over a black cat or summert! That's a bummer about the van failing the Motty.

I've been messing around with this 'ere dash cam, the Chinese to English instruction manual is gobbledegook & the onscreen instructions are in Chinese

It would have been nice to know how to change the time/date.

I think I've sorted out which buttons do what for the recording & parked modes, not sure which Movie format I'm in but looks like 720HD as this tiny vid file was 75Mb's Quality isn't too bad albeit a dark dank rainy day here.

Typical! this weekend was a mega sale on that Chinese site 'bang good' and this dash cam was reduced to half the price what I paid

Thankfully all seems well. Off to the cat rescue in a short while so will be able to fully test everything.
The Pro spec bodies are environmentally sealed to protect from light rain/dust etc but this was a monsoon that fell on us with no prior warning

The answer......Nope as direct heat can cause many problems for electronic components not least dry joints on sensitive surface mounted components

The correct procedure is as I did and is relevant to pretty much all electronic devices that come into contact with liquids.

Immediately turn off power and if possible remove any power source (batteries). open any ports and put in a warm dry place such as an airing cupboard making sure the item is places so any liquid can egress out of any open orifices (think headphone socket on mobile phone etc)
If you have dried rice such as I had, place the item in the rice (making sure rice cannot enter the internals of the item) The dried rice will help to draw and absorb liquid out of the device.

I left my camera overnight and into the day today to make sure it has fully dried out.

There is always the chance however that you can have problems later on if there is any remaining liquid as the PCB boards can suffer creeping corrosion.

Fingers crossed I have got away with it as a new replacement for my camera (body only) is in excess of £4000

Anyhow, hope my above advice may help someone if they do end up in a similar situation

Hi Jeff,

A few years ago, I was out in a boat on Lake Naivasha in Kenya filming the Hippos with a Sony Video camera and it rained. Only a splash but the flip-out LCD screen packed up. Cam not sealed. The next day, I took the camera into a Sony dealer and the camera's LCD screen was replaced for a new one, no fuss. The turn around for the work was 24 hours and £40. It was not a big job. Hopefully drying out the electric components - your way will do the trick and what about doing a reset to factory settings.

If it gets wet again there it'll need more than drying out Mate of mine showed me pics of the internals of an amplifier that a tom cat had sprayed, absolutely destroyed.

First the van getting bumped, which will result in at least 1 day lost income, when it goes for repair, then me having the fall, now the MOT fail. it will be out of commission for at least half a day to get the suspension bush and brake pipes done, and maybe the same or longer for the welding.

Evening all, We've had a fair few heavy showers rolling through all afternoon, It's got very blowy with horizontal rain at the moment.

Roast chicken dinner for tea.
