Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I honestly can't remember what I paid back in 1962 when I passed my test but I know shortly afterwards I got my first Rover, a P4 and it did around 16mpg.
Petrol prices were never really a consideration in those days as it was so cheap.

It was in the 1970s that OPEC hyped the price of oil up with the excuse that the world would run out oil in twenty years, and look at it now we have a glut of the stuff

So true Derek, I can remember the petrol rationing & pushing your car along the queue to the petrol pumps because you had run out of petrol, then being told 2 gallon maximum mate
I've still got my petrol ration book they issued to everyone back then, They were never used as far as I know.
Here's my petrol ration book with my early 70's Class 1 licence & my car licence.

I remember queuing up at the Post Office to get that ration book.
Everyone had to bring their tax disc in to be checked, too.
You are right, they were never used in the 70s.

Happy days!

I think the petrol prices virtually doubled as a result of the fuel crisis.

This must be ranked among the Top 10 most depressing threads ever!

I started driving in 1989 and petrol was 40p /litre (£1.81 /gallon).

Did we have decimal coinage in 1968? I thought it came in in the 70s.

I can remember fuel at 3/6d and later at 5/- a gallon.

The day I passed my test I filled my car up and it cost me £1 and the tank held 5 gallons so allowing for what was in the tank already it was about 24P a GALLON.Happy Days.

In fact the day I passed I bought the car,Taxed it,Insured it and had change out of £25.

But I was only earning £2.17 shillings and six pence take home pay a week.

Maybe, but back in the 60's, 70's and 80's I was quite frivolous with my fuel useage. I would drive, just for the sheer pleasure of driving on the slightest excuse. I still love my driving, but now I need to make sure I have a valid reason to drive.
