Default How much was petrol when you got your first car!

One of the neighbours kids asked me recently what the price of a gallon of petrol was when I got my first car. My first car was a 1959 Morris Mini & the price of a gallon of petrol in 1971 was 35p I used to put £1 in the tank on pay day & it lasted me a week
Here's a list of petrol prices in £SD & decimal prices.

I used to pay 31p a gallon for my motorbikes in 1968. I can remember thinking the world just had to end as we all knew it when the price went to 50p a gallon

But considering the buying power of a £1 in 1968 is now £16.40 - the current price of a gallon of petrol at less than a fiver is actually far better than we think.

Cool

32p a gallon when I first drove, legally. First car I owned outright was a Series 2 Morris Minor with split windscreen.

As an apprentice mechanic my garage used to give a gallon of petrol away with every MOT, it was my job to dispense it and the price was 28p a gallon or just over 6p a litre, 1 shilling and tuppence in real money.

Remember our local BP garage had a machine .. try to evenually get a crumpled pound note in .. and you got 3 gallons ..

But was forever having it busted by pikey types trying to rob it!!
