I had a Saturday job with a coal merchant and we had to go through the picket lines to collect "essential" coal for people who were "at risk". They got an allocation (from the union - authorised by the local councils). It was quite scary, as some lorries had been attacked by miners and their families on the way in and out of the pits. We managed to get a sash from the NUM, which we fixed to the front of the lorry and then' we had no bother. None of our at risk customers went without coal, as it had been stockpiled before the strike. The pensioners on one estate gave us a "Heroes Welcome" when we arrived. Many of them gave buckets of coal to other families with small kids etc. My great grandfather was a "hewer" at 14 years old. Hard times.

Like it and it was totally true!
