Default 1.8t...faulty heat reading...Never 9 o clock

My zt 1.8t does not get hot(obviously it does) according too the speedo..
..NEVER reaches 9oclock while driving..Does not reach 9oclock position unless i leave it running for a while... when I hit the defroster and fan kicks in it drops rather quickly...

Do I have a termostat fault or what could this be?

Sounds like a Thermostat fault - your appear to be running cool - failing that a faulty coolant temperature sensor - but personally i think the former.

Use the IPK diagnostics to get the engine temp readout when the car's running. The temp dial is never the most accurate.

My 1.8T runs slightly cool at a steady 83° as I fitted a cooler stat out of fear of it overheating (I am considering changing this to run warmer). Ideally the 1.8T should run around 88-92°.

On my car -which has a Hans Gauge fitted - 9 o clock on the temp dial is reached in the early mid 70's - as you are not getting to 9 you seem to be running cool -which over time will damage the engine.

The 9 o'clock/'Normal' point on the standard gauge is a temperature band of 75-115°C.
So, when the coolant reaches 75°C, the needle will reach 'Normal' even though it's way below true normal running tempertures. THe needle will stand there until/unless the engine gets hotter and hotter. But only at 115°C will it start to move. When that happens, something's clearly amiss and the usual next stage is a rapid rise to the top and the red warning light pops on. Basically, it's not worth the room it takes up. Think of it like this -

Its always lying at the second mark, 7 o,clockish....I have done the trip diagnostics thing and its a a steady 80-85 while running...

Assuming there isn't a large glob of air in the engine (in which case it needs a refill and bleed), then the thermostat is faulty. It's supposed to stay closed up to 88C or so. Yours is causing the system over-cool. The 'normal' running temperature is in the 90C area. A new thermostat will fix it. Your 2005 model has an external PRT so a simple job almost anyone can do.
