Probably too late now, but I cured my BAD screen leak with the magical Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure (no, really) without replacing anything...

Yes the clips require modifying, but only slightly.

Plus the part numbers you quote have been superseded by the ones in my earlier post.

The rest is sound advice.
Could you send me a link as to how you fit these with the screen in place? There was NO WAY at all they were going under the rear screen on my ZT without breaking the square pins off the underside of the clip. These are what secures the clip in place.

Also, I said that anyone who claims they can be fitted with the screen in place is misguided, as it would be impossible without modifying the clip. You then said you're not misguided, but you modify the clip?

Personally, I consider cutting bits of the clip to be a 'bodge', but I understand different people have different levels of what they consider this to be.

A bodge maybe, but so what? It would appear our cars aren't worth more than a few hundred quid anyway.

OK, but I'm afraid that I do not accept bodges as a lasting, correct and proper repair.

Good luck with the sale of your car and to the original poster with their repair.

It would appear that the people who I have fitted new clips for, are happy and find it to be a long lasting and adequate repair. The longest one about 18 months ago.

If you want to remove the rear screen and risk breaking it, go for gold, but the clips can be replaced, windscreen in place, and work perfectly with a small modification. A broken screen would have to be sourced if you broke that, I know which one I prefer.

If you want to know how, or just want me to do it for you let me know.

Default Rear windscreen trim retainers

Let's not loose site of the fact that these clips merely retain the trim around the windscreen and have no other purpose, to say that it is a bodge to trim a tiny amount from the clip to enable it to seat under the window rather than remove the rear screen and run the risk of smashing an item that is no longer available is just plain daft.

Default Greydog

My MG ZT, which I recently bought, seems to be leaking into the boot. I'm guessing that it's something to do with the rear windscreen seal because the previous owner seems to have tried to bodge up the windscreen trim with black sealant. I'm hoping that, as an expert, you can offer some suggestions as to how I can fix this.

what do you have to do to get them to fit?
Does it depend on the exact placement of the rear screen, low and its not possible?

1) The earlier clips I believe only had a seal between the body and the underside of the clip.

2) The later clips I believe had an extra round foamy seal around the pin.

3) Liberally spraying silicone around all the clips can stop leaks and moistens the dried out foam seals and makes them seal again.

4) It was my understanding that you can replace the clips no problem with the screen in place, as long as you cut the pin heads in half? I cant remember as its been so long, but Im sure there was enough room to wiggle the clips out as long as the pin was in the up position, is that nonsense and the glasss holds it 100% tight to the body no matter what the pin is doing?
