In the 70's I used to work for GPO telephones. Back then they were very competent, it was efficient, well run and staff actually cared. Not now, its always down to to the apparent lowest cost and skill counts for nothing. It is like all trades in modern Britain.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I would disagree that it is all trades Harry. There are some businesses that offer tremendous service and product. A look at the Sunday Times Top UK Businesses is well worth the effort.

One firm I have experience of is Stryker U.K. at number 14 this year - up a few places from 2017. They make medical bits and pieces of the highest quality.

They and the other 99 businesses we should be proud off - but with a few exceptions - most people have not heard of most of these firms.

It is so true that bad news travels faster and further than good news - and that is especially true in the era of social media.

People and organisations will always make mistakes - it is how the mistakes are dealt with that sets an organisation apart. And this is true in both positive and negative cases.

When a mistake is made it is an opportunity to show customers just how good you are. Do it well and customers find new respect for the business.

Do it badly with indifference and lies - and the customers you had - you have no more and they don’t stop talking about it.

Does that make you a strowger man? Only time I saw a TO (Technical officer) run was doing a 999 trace.
walking around a telephone exchange now compared to the 70's and 80's almost unrecognisable. Only the MDF (main distribution frame) is recognisable. Everything else from that era, gone.
In a nut shell, the mdf is where all the phone numbers connect to the cables going to peoples houses.

I will say that I consider BT to have been a good employer. When my role disappeared I was on full pay sitting at home until I could find a new role. 6 months this went on for for me, others it has been a lot longer. None of this making people redundant. I wish BT all the best but for goodness sakes, get your customer service in order.

Yes, Strowger and Crossbar! Leeds Basinghall St. still had a lot of waxed cotton cables installed back then.

My own local exchange was built in the Strowger days and I worked there a while, when the village was expanding rapidly and they were still adding extra racks to cope with the expanding demand. The building now does much more, yet it is mostly empty.

Well after 48hrs of perfect reception, Internet playing up again this morning.
Done speed test, still on 52. But lost connection 3 times in last 20 mins.
I have been given 2 bits of advice: 1. Switch off router when not in use,(Static build up.) 2. Never switch router off.
But there again it could be my Laptop needs warming up in the morning, before behaving well.
