Top Engine Mount
Can anyone here confirm if it's okay to remove the top "engine mount" (at least, that's what I call it!) without supporting the engine? The bit I'm referring to is the big metal part with grooves and a rubber centre that bolts to the off-side inner wing (see photo).
To my eyes, it looks like it just stops the engine from shaking around rather than taking it's full weight and should come off with the removal of 4 or 5 large bolts. Second question: if it can be safely removed, is it easy to get back on? Obviously, I wouldn't contemplate starting the engine without the part safely in place. Cliff

To be honest whenever I've removed these on my diesel, helps you to drop the engine to make changing the belts easier I've always supported the engine under the sump with a block of wood on the jack spreading the weight.
Others may differ but that's what I do Regards Paul

Aaah, ok. Doesn't sound to onerous, but maybe I'd be better off leaving well alone . I should perhaps add, I'm thinking primarily off the 1.8 engine (rather than my own V6) as I'm giving someone a hand to tidy up their engine bay. That said though, if it was as simple as I first thought, I'd do the same to my V6 .

Renewed mine a couple of years back Cliff, straight off without propping the engine Bit fiddly to juggle out but no real worries

It's just the upper tie-bar, so stops the engine rocking and doesn't take weight as such.
The hydramount is the one that takes the weight You can remove without supporting the engine as it is fully supported by the hydramount. MGR even did a technical tip or bulletin to help with NVH in which they suggested running the engine with the upper tie-bar bolts slackened and then tighten them up. I assumed you were taking it off your Lagoon to make it even shinier!

Last coupke i did all i did was chock a block of timber between the intake
manifold and the firewall. Just dont push it down to far as you could damage the spark plug coils. Engine never moved and new part bolted straight in. |

Sounds complicated but it is more time consuming than being hard to do, once you have the engine supported it is plane sailing. few pics below.
