KV6: using timing service tools
It's been a bit tricky getting the camshaft front sprocket holding tool to fit.
First I found that the low pressure air conditioning pipe was in the way. It could not be moved because the PAS hose was sandwiched between it and the back of the headlamp assembly. So the PAS reservoir strap had to be loosened so that the holding tool could just be inserted square to the engine: Even now the tool is touching the a.c. hose which is not very satisfactory. Nobody else has mentioned this! Then I discovered that with the holding tool engaged in the end of the exhaust camshaft, the holes on the inlet sprocket were not quite aligned with the pins so the tool wouldn't fit that! The engine needed to be turned clockwise by a miniscule amount. To do this the locking pin had to be removed. Looking at the alignment of the notches on the rear sprockets they must have moved closer by a small amount. This is what they looked like originally: And AFTER the tiny adjustment: But now the locking pin won't engage with the flywheel! So we have to ask ourselves again, what is the definitive timing position? The rear sprocket notches or the locking pin? You can't seem to have both! Simon

Indeed you cant seem to have both.
With the front tools fitted and the lockng pin in the rears will of course nearly be meeting however not exactly or not enough for the rear tool to slot in whilst in the safe position. I have found this on 4 of my own KV6 engined cars some un touched from the factory some with previous rover dealer changes (all varients i.e 2.0 litre, 177, 190). You will see there are plenty of forum discussions on the matter if you do a quick search. Last edited by jn12; 19th April 2018 at 14:20.. |

With reference to some other recent nippy threads, are you trying to incite a riot ? Brian maybe a dab hand at many things but he cannot make up for engineering tolerances inherent in the KV6 design.

Are you using the right set of front locking tools, you are aware there are three different ones ??
Here we have the 190 for example.......... The 177 and 150 have different front tools, but the rear remains the same. Brian Last edited by marinabrian; 19th April 2018 at 16:53.. |

I did a lot of searching and asked a lot of questions before doing this job, thinking of writing a guide to supplement the official writing.
As I understand it, the correct timing is when the locking pin is in place AND the front tools fit. Usually necessary to slacken the front chainwheel to rotate the inlet cam slightly to achieve this. But, if you are doing the belt change without the tools then don't slacken the front wheel, after doing the job the timing will be as accurate (or not) as it was before if you do it right. |
