IMHO it is probably caused by mechanics who are in a rush or not aware overtightening the handbrake adjuster screw, rather than adjusting at the rear wheel hubs. (The Rover part number has not changed at all over the different editions of the vehicle). And probably a fair dollop of how hard you pull on the handle - is your house/drive on a hill?

If your car is lucky enough to have had a competent and conscientious mechanic doing the work then you may have escaped this. But for the majority of 75's by now this is probably not the case.

By the way, this is all good news and everyone involved should be congratulated. Saved me a lot of head scratching and time. Having spent 2 hours adjusting to no avail a few weeks ago.

Did mine today, many little cuts on hands (every edge on the car seems to have been made like a razor blade) and the carpet is immensely stiff, but job done in about 45 mins. Handbrake is now awesome! 3 clicks is rock solid.

Mine was holding on 3 clicks before but only with way too much adjustment on the cable, and it still felt wooly and stretchy.

13mm, but you will need a 13mm deep one. I didn't have one when I first did mine, but I managed to fashion a tube spanner out of some tube in the vice. The nuts are not usually tight, just awkward to get to.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I have received my modified compensator and am trying to fit. Followed the very helpful instructions above but am struggling to get the carpet to bend sufficiently to get access to the three torx screws. Ic an just about get to the single one. The console is unscrewed by the seats and at the ashtray. Carpet is free all away around the edge upto the seat belt anchors. I am pulling it at the edge that has come away from under the seat squab.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I am still on the original one, getting on for 15 years and it is coming up high. I think Its time I did something about it from the point of view of safety.
