Radio code identifying difficulty

Hi - I've had a Rover 75 Tourer (54) for a couple of months now. I got it with a battery drain which the previous owner had allowed to flatten the battery - hence loss of radio code. I've fixed the battery drain ( I hope - rear tailgate ) but now have no radio code. I tried one free site online which did not store it. The next port of call was my local Rover dealer - Morrisons in Stirling - they were helpful and said they would try and obtain it, obviously at a price. They rang me to say that Rover did not store the code for my radio ?
Why is this ? Is it because its one of the later models ? Or have they just made a mistake.
Has anyone come up against this difficulty of obtaining a code before ?
( The previous owner does not know, neither does the one before that and the car has lost its security details card )

Ian, what type of radio is fitted to your car........does it look like this?
