Question Diesel clatter - warm only

Strange clatter from diesel after it has been left for a while and then restarted with the temp gauge just registering. Clatters at low rpm as you pull away and disappears over 2000 rpm and gradually dies away as it gets hot. But it doesn't do it when you start from cold and the engine is warm. Is this a normal characteristic? Comments from previous owner at services going back quite a while. Garage comments like "nothing found".

Cannot be serious as has done 57k miles fully serviced and no problem driving. Doesn't even make this noise when cold.

I haven't had any comments but have spotted something of interest about diesel noise and at what temperatures are on the temp gauge.

I've found the diesel clatter from warm up to the mid point on the gauge which in theory is showing the engine up to temperature. But is it? Some miles later the clatter stops and the gauge hasn't moved past the mid point, so my conclusion is that the gauge registers hot when the engine has not actually reached full temperature.

It might be that the temp sensor is on the hot side of the thermostat in a hot spot.

The gauge is programmed to show 9 o clock, for a wide range of temperature values - not to be relied upon, use the dash diagnostics for an accurate reading.

Mine is noisy from cold, until it starts to warm up. If I let it tick over from cold, after about 10 minutes the engine note suddenly changes and it goes fairly quite. I'm guessing the ECU suddenly decides it is warm enough and adjusts something.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

with the synergy switched on mine sounds like there is a little man with a pick axe trying to get out when cold all disappears when fully warmed up

I had a Toyota like that. A mate did some tests, and discovered that the standard temp gauge had a flat spot of 20 Degrees!. When at it's normal position, it could be indicating anywhere from 90-110 (130 in some cases!) Degrees C!. he developed a little box that you wie into the back of the temp gauge and sold them at £20 a pop. Very popular too!.

Basically it recalibrated the standard gauge and gave movement through the flat spot. It also has a an audible alarm that sounds at a temperature of your choosing!.

Been listening to the BMW engine carefully. From cold, its quiet from cold all the way up to full temperature after a run. THEN, stop the engine, leave it for about 20 minutes or so and restart. As you pull away it clatters quiet badly and gradually quietens until full temperature is reached. When you get to 2000 rpm it stops. Yet its quiet from cold all the way up to temperature. Weird. Wonder if there is a problem somewhere?

Thanks for that. I'll check but why only when at warm start up. Gonna see a diesel specialist just in case. Bought it from a dealer and under full warranty.

There has to be something unusual with your engine cos my diesel doesn't clatter at any speed or temperature.

Hi. Mine was doing this while the temps have been so low recently. And as the engine couldn't get to normal operating temperature would make a clattering under light acceleration. Sounded like everything was loose inside.
Since the warmer weather it does it still but a lot less.
