Noise on acceleration ..?
Guys
I have a 1.8 turbo R75 (2002, 65k miles) and after 3 months I'm very happy with it, apart from ... ... there's this noise on acceleration, it's sort of like a hissing but kind of metallic as well. Imagine someone spinning two flat metal plates together. It seems to be linked to throttle opening and engine load rather than speed or revs because it goes away when you lift your foot off the gas - even slightly. A friend (non expert) suggests a noisy turbocharger. Anyone else had this noise? It's always been there since I had the car, doesn't seem to affect performance other than the fact that I tend not to push the car too hard to avoid hearing the din so it's probably saving me loads of petrol Ta |

check your oil level and all the vaccum pipes and air hoses to the turbo.
I've a 1.8t and that made loud noises that sounded like windnoise when a pipe blew off.

Hi.
I have a 1.8T and get this type of sound as I accelerate. I thought it was clutch at first but it does it when the clutch is out under load. I can hear mine more in lower gears and thought it may be a belt slipping or starting to slip. Sort of a screech noise, bit wierd. May not help but I might have the same and my engine has done 2K miles in a 2003 1.8T. (New engine so it probably isn't that!) |

@ Phil. The turbo is that thing just behind the radiator with the big hoses coming out of it .. right?
.. Or have I been looking at the waterpump? Time for a Haynes manual methinks. Thing is, the car won't make the noise when revved up standing still .. the motor has to be under some kind of load. I'm sure it's load related as it's definitely louder when you're trying to go uphill. @ Ratdogfink. Not a screech deffo a hissing. If you've ever sat at a drum kit, imagine rotating the two high hat cymbals against each other .. Ta CC |

To me I think you are talking about the turbo wastegate noise - perfectly normal!

Yes, I also think the turbocharger growls. But mine's more of a gravelly howl than a hiss. Mine does is when accelerating, specifically at the point when you press the clutch to go up a gear. Like on the over-run. Don't know what the mechanism is, but it's definitely emanating from the lower left as I'm driving, which is where the turbo is. It sounds like a 'resonance' in the exhaust pipe.
TC [EDIT: That's growls not grows!] Last edited by T-Cut; 8th March 2007 at 01:15.. |

The wastegate will open and close a full times a second (this is a metalic sound) to prevne the turbo from over boosting under hard acceleration. You will hear these noises more if you have the window down or if you have fitted a performance air filter. They are perfectly normal noises on a turbo car.
