Default Have I been ripped off?

I use garages at little as possible & am probably out of touch with what they charge. I took my son's Fiesta (he is away) into our local garage (not a dealer) & it failed on centre stoplight & brake pipe corrosion. They took ½ hour to get the centre stop light out (had been sealed in with silicone) & replaced both front flexi brake pipes & both front rigid brake pipes & one rear brake pipe, two brake nipples & replaced the brake fluid. I was presented with a bill for £295 which included VAT & £40 for the MOT.

They also MOTed the Rover & charged £73 for replacing one brake pipe (n/s rear)

It seemed a bit steep, labour & parts weren't itemised separately, I have trusted them in the past but used them for small things like tyres & testing. Should I find a different one to use in the future?

£255 for parts and say 3/4 hours labour sounds reasonable

£73 for again sounds reasonable for brake pipe replacement, it has to be removed, the new pipe has to be shaped and brakes bled etc. 1 hour and a bit for parts sounds about right

Kim needs two new rear brake pipes. They say they have to drop the petrol tank cos the pipes go over the top. He told me it could take a full day and quoted £350 for a days labour. Then there's the cost of parts etc.
I retired recently and so can afford it, but it seemed a lot at the time. From what you've said it now sounds like a normal price.

I did this job for a local member in December, I charged him a roll of Kunifer, and kept his original pipework to use as a pattern for future jobs

Those prices are very good, in the South East / London you could almost double those prices.

Would have been a lot worse if you had visitedva Jaguar Dealer.

I got ripped off £760 for rear suspension arms which were not required.
I later changed them back to the originals and got another MOT with a pass.

Parks Jaguar Ayr refused to refund or even negotiate a settlement, hence I’m now driving a Mercedes.

SWMBO son has recently bought a 2007 Golf, I was looking through the service history and the last service cost £275 and £108 of that was for 4 litres of engine oil and £35 for a filter. The previous Service had brake pads on the bill at £115 a set and £100 for fitting them.

It amazes me how many garages overcharge but they seem to get away with it as so many don't understand what it should cost.

I heard of one garage not far from me had charged an owner over £1000 for a cambelt change on a Fiesta, yes its a big job but no way should it cost that kind of money.

We bought a new Polo for the missus which had three years free servicing "included" in the deal. We got a call at service No. 2 to ask if we wanted the air con service doing. I said that servicing was "included" in my purchase price. They tried to fob me off with it being an extra but a chat with the service manager had it removed from the bill! When it came to service No. 4, we politely declined and it hasn't seen a VW garage since! I couldn't believe how long the "service" took. It went into the garage at 3.50 and exited the workshop at 4.10 to be washed and dried off (despite it being pristine!). It's just been in for MOT (now 7 years old) and passed again with no advisories.
