It burns diesel, and uses the heat generated to heat the engines coolant, in order to improve your heater performance. They can also be used to pre-heat the coolant, prior to starting, in order to improve cold start performance in cold climates.

Driving into work this morning, I noticed white smoke in my rear view. This was under hard acceleration in fifth. Is this the same as mentioned previously in this thread or something else entirely?

There is a filter somewhere on the back of the engine which gets blocked and needs renewing
Mine almost became a James Bond car with smoke out the back
If filter gets blocked, white smoke palls out the back and eventually the pressure build up will lob oil out of the dipstick breather
Get it checked-Cost me £20 for the part and an hours labour
