Bit more info on this.

I wouldn't start, even when cold and the battery was dying so I used jump leads and it started fine.

As the battery isn't in great condition I bought a new one.

Still wouldn't start this morning, tried the jump leads and it fired up first time.

What does this indicate, it's a brand new battery so surely it should be getting enough power.

Im a nut and bolt fitter just thinking of what comes to mind.
Was it a rover battery or equivilent? maybe that the new batery was not as charged as it could have been after a good run on the car.

Top of my head now i thought of glow plugs, how long does it take for the light to go out first with the battery you have and then with the jump leads on?

You may find my website's 75 servicing and fault finding pages useful.

They cover the correct way to check for leakback and I'm just about to add a photo of a fuel pressure regulator with a damaged 'o' ring. This is quite rare, and not easy to diagnose because most fuel related problems tend to give similar symptoms.
