On the "blown turbo" issue.. My car had a new turbo fitted not long before i bought it at a cost of £850 (receipt found with car documents) I asked the prev lady owner why she had it replaced. her reply was that the car was dripping oil from underneath and the garage (Main Rover dealers in Tiverton) informed her it was a "blown" turbo and it needed a new one..
I did the "disable EGR mod" on my car hoping to reduce the amount of soot I was getting on my rear bumper.. It made no difference to that! In fact it made no detectable difference as far as driving-fuel consumption etc goes that I can detect.. But at least I don't have to keep cleaning it! ... |

I'm on the side of our resident senior Guru James!...... Keep it but disconnect the Vacuum hose and seal it with a shanked woodscrew, pop rivet, broken drill bit etc. I've seen many blocked off with an ordinary wood screw with threads right up the head..................of course this won't seal the pipe as the air enters via the screw thread, with the possibility of reducing your brake servo vacuum !

The easy way to disable the EGR is to pull the lil vac pipe off its spigot, then pinch the very tip of the spigot closed with a pair of pliers, and pop the vac tube back on..
In the advent of wanting to restore the EGR to working order you just have to open the end of the spigot again with a small flat bladed screwdriver.. :xmas-smiley-031: ... |

Well i just went about cleaning my EGR valve but found it was already clean! It just had light deposits on it. I justy sprayed it with carb cleaner with the engine running. Lots of white smoke and lumpy running but its all fine now. No history of it being cleaned in the service history, but im guessing some one did it at some point.
I agree it probably not a good idea to remove it, just spray it with carb cleaner once a month, it takes about 5 mins. As far as it hindering breathing, my understanding is that with turbo cars its best to improve flow before the turbo rather than after. Sure it will help a bit, but the improvement you get from gas flowing and a larger inlet manifold is much less than with a NASP car. a clean manifold and EGR are all that we need, but a bigger intake/airbox is certainly a good idea. I dont think £50 spent on a bypass is good value. |
