It was very quiet when stone cold first thing in the morning, then after about 1/2, mile became very knocky, then got quieter as it warmed up. However it never was as quiet as it was for that first 1/2 mile even on a hot day. Its a timing and combustion quality issue. Using Shell V Power and/or adding a double dose of Millers Ecomax to it will make a difference. Ron

Another thing to throw into the mix is lower engine mount. If that's worn out, it will be less able to damp the vibrations of a cold engine. |

Its only there under load as in neutral and reved up, no noise. Into D (auto) with brake on and rev its there so its a combustion/load issue. May also be something to do with the 2 stage injection? I think they inject a little fuel in early before the main charge to keep it quiet. I think Perkins did this in the Montego diesel first and everybody criticised it and now its universal! Ho hum! Still goes from A to B. |

Saw a diesel expert today who says there is nothing major wrong. Sounds like a breathing, booster problem and suggested I check all the intercooler/inlet tract and the EGR. Suggested it might be the removal of the EGR hose which I did a few weeks ago as recommended by some members.
I have a small leak from the intercooler seals but not serious enough for me to consider doing. He said it could be this? Anybody comment? Anybody done this mod and found extra noise? |

Here's another bit of food for thought - when the engine's stone cold, the glow plugs remain ON for a while until the engine reaches a minimum operating temperature. When they turn OFF there is a bit more clatter. If the engine's started after having already been run, the glow plugs remain OFF.
If I start my CDT from cold, I can hear the sudden difference in engine note after 5-10 mins when the glow plugs turn off, also noticable by the suden reduction in alternator load, the idle speed changes a little. HTH, Pete. |

Had a look at the crankshaft pulley/damper. Looks fine. If its failing does it show on visual inspection?

I had to replace the crank pulley on my car, after it was done the engine was considerably quieter, but I can't say the engine was particularly noisy before the pulley change..
The point being, a new pulley may solve the problem. But -- Like most jobs, one thing leads to another. i.e. while the pulleys off you may as well change the belts... ... |

just noticed mine does it sometimes when warm it seems to be exagerated by the synergy which would be expected but with regard to the phenomenon itself can't really explain it
