Default overheating

I think it's all part and parcel of the same problem. Overheating, water seemingly being forced out of the expansion tank, all down to a fault in the head or gasket. Before she packed up I could tootle along at 50-ish no problem but if I suddenly booted her the temp gauge would shoot up, red lights. I could see vapour escaping from the metal pipe, but right under the inlet manifold so I couldn't pinpoint it exactly.

PS, I've paid my tenner but can't seem to upload any pics to illustrate things.

Default state of engine

Mike Noc kindly came over and removed the head and it wasn't good. I have two melted pistons. How and why it happened I've got no idea but I'm now at a bit of a crossroads with the car as to what to do?

Bit strange that the damage was on the cooler inlet side of the engine. Pistons 3 and 4 are both damaged at the top left hand edge in the photo and letting by.

There was evidence of coolant leaking around the liner of number 3, which I measured at a tad under 0.6mm below the block.
