The tax rate is the rate when the car was registered. You can take a car with a very low tax band, tune it up, supercharge it, create more exhaust pollutants than say a 4 x 4 gas guzzler and you will still pay the same tax rate as a bog standard non-modified car. Got to agree with this! My other car is an mgb and there are several pre-tax mgb's on the scene that have been tuned up to the eyeballs including V8 3.5 conversions that still pay no tax! I guess that if this strategy brings in more revenue either by increased VED or by new car purchase similar to the scrapage scam we'll see more of this. Shame really - I loved the auto box in my old 800.
