I think I'm right in saying you are both correct. Recommended oils are:-
0W-40 fully synthetic
10W-40 semi synthetic.

WOW!!! I have a 2001 Auto CDT and from full to yellow light I get about 385-390 miles at this time of year but in the summer it is slightly better (don't know why.... it just is) with about 400 to 410 miles - however I do tend to drive with a light right foot. With a tankful costing over fifty quid yours must be a very expensive motor to run!!

I was always told the single most important factor in determining fuel economy (petrol or diesel) was how hard you accelerate so I tend to drive with the MPG display showing on the computer and accelerate quite gently which helps to give decent fuel consumption. I tend to get about 35mpg overall in winter with about 38mpg in summer. On a long motorway run it is much better - a recent run to Gatwick and back showed 46mpg. My daily motoring is usually 5 miles on B roads, 5 mile crawl to the motorway, 3 mile crawl to the next exit, 5 miles A roads to work, and the reverse on the way home. Scintillating journey, isn't it?, and the best part of an hour each way....

Given that it is a large, heavy automatic luxury car I am very pleased with the fuel consumption. The performance is nothing to shout about but I didn't buy a sports car - I bought a Rover, and I'm pleased that I did.

2.5 Automatic Rob, is a very thirsty beast, I get between 20 and 28 mpg out of mine. Depending on traffic conditions.
Fortunately my yearly mileage is under 8K so it is not too much of an issue.

Ditto to that GG. I reguarly get 26mpg. That's got an average speed on the trip computer of 25-30.

I reset the trip computer on every fill up. Optimax (or whatever the new one is called) gives me over 26-28mpg, Tesco's cheap stuff gives me 25-26mpg.

My old Cdt averaged 48 mpg. I had the Cdti upgrade done and the best I managed after that was 58mpg on a steady (mainly motorway) run at 70/75 mph from Bristol to Huddersfield.

By contrast my current 1.8 petrol averages 34mpg on a steady run.

Hmmm! I've always complained that my 1.8 Petrol gives me 22~24 mpg in the city but that is in very very short runs - 4 or 5 miles a day and a few more in the weekend. On a good run on the motorway that goes up to 36 mpg and even 38/39 mpg if I watch my speed/ revs.

I know the small trips don't help but I still think 22 mpg is very poor.

1) Tyre pressures - make sure they are correct.
2) EGR / PCV clean - it may help a little. See the how to guides on this website.
3) Oil - Use a good quality oil. I find a 0-40w gives a bit better MPG than the 10-40w specified.
4) Reduce the MAFAM a little - as you suggest. Are you getting any smoke?

One more thing - you do have the correct MAFAM for the Pierburg MAF?

OK, and another, where do you have the temperature sensor for the MAFAM?
Hi,

Thanks for the heads up. I am going to try all the things you mentioned at the weekend. Unfortunately I am too busy this week to do it any earlier.

The last time I checked, my tyre pressures were ok (last week). The oil I used when I last did a filter change was Halfords Semi-Synth 10-40w (diesel).

I bought the MAFAM from RoverRon with the temperature sensor for use with the Pierburgh.

Cheers,

Pete

Pete

Are you getting any smoke at all under hard acceleration?

It may also be worth investing in some good quality injector cleaner.
