Right, there must be something up with my car as I am only getting about 400 miles to a tank brim to brim. Got a PSI Powerbox Digital Tuning Box (bought before RoverRon was making his TU3b) and a MAFAM with Pierburgh MAF. I also have a K&N Airfilter (which looks to be in perfect nick).

I do a 40 minute drive to work in the morning and then a 40 minute run back home in the evening. This is mostly country driving with about ten to fifteen minutes of town driving. Twice a week in the evenings I also do a thirty minute run on the motorway and about 10 mins of town driving.

I use Millers DPP and Shell diesel extra.

What would you recommend I check? EGR Valve? If so what do I need to do to clean this out, and should this make a difference to fuel economy?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pete

PS I am going to disconnect the PSI box and also adjust the MAFAM a little to see if it makes a difference.

What speeds/distances are we talking about?

The time of year has a lot to do with mpg on these cars.
You can expect 5-10% less, when used on frequent short journeys, due to the long warm up time.

No-one has found out so far, why some owners get worse than average mpg.

There may not be an engine related reason: it may be just down to time of year, driving style, traffic conditions, type/distance of journeys, gearbox type etc.

Ron

It's probably not beneficial to mpg to try and stay in a high gear and use very low revs, even if the engine will pull from 1000rpm.
Why not try keeping them above 1400rpm so that the turbo is producing some boost and the engine is operating more efficiently.

The journey to work and back is roughly 40 miles.

A few things to try!

1) Tyre pressures - make sure they are correct.
2) EGR / PCV clean - it may help a little. See the how to guides on this website.
3) Oil - Use a good quality oil. I find a 0-40w gives a bit better MPG than the 10-40w specified.
4) Reduce the MAFAM a little - as you suggest. Are you getting any smoke?

One more thing - you do have the correct MAFAM for the Pierburg MAF?

OK, and another, where do you have the temperature sensor for the MAFAM?

That's what I use John, Mobil 1 Diesel Oil 0-40w, but the manual in mine (last of the Mk1) say 10-40w - think!!!
