Tripod mate and self timer. But if you put the camera on a tripod make sure you turn off the IS.

Yeah it rather nice. I tend to only shoot it when it's low and large.

Does anyone recognise this crater? I snapped it a few years back using a 10" Meade and a webcam. The seeing was pretty poor due to heat haze.

I don't do so much astro stuff these days, but here's my first attempt at the Ring Nebula in Lyra. This is a stacked image incorporating several dozen frames using the same kit.

I have more astro stuff, ISS, moon videos if anyone's interested.

No good on craters I'm afraid. I wasn't into solar system stuff much, I could have spotted the Ring Nebula though. These days I'm more into reading on Relativity or Quantum Mechanics.

I am determined to have a go at some shots of the Moon and was planning on trying image stacking. At the moment the moon is to new and it's cloudy.

Known as the Moon Illusion. It's always the same size of course. But having something to scale it against, a tree for example, makes it appear gigantic.

I might have a go at the moon. High up on the mountain and in the southern hemisphere I am not sure what results I will get using the SX40. The moon usually rises behind the crest of the mountain range. I did not bring a tripod with me and will have to sort that out first. Then it will be waiting for the moon to appear, line the shot up and set the cam and self timer right. Keep my fingers crossed too.

Not sure what your broadband speed is so I will paraphrase.

The Canon sx40 will not allow the ISO to be set higher than 100 for exposures longer than 1 second. I think you should be able to get shots of the moon but some nightime shooting will be hampered by this.

I have not looked into this in any great depth so I may br wrong but I saw it and thought of you.

Due to the increased noise generated from a longer exposure on a CCD sensor I wouldn't want to shoot any higher that ISO 100 anyway.
