When I served in the RAF in the early eighties, safety was paramount, indeed the RAF safety record was second to none. I seem to remember RAF personnel being snapped up by the civilian aviation industry at that time.
The Nimrod is now an elderly design but age does not really have a bearing on this issue. The RAF has many elderly aircraft including the Hercules whose design goes back to the 1950s. The Nimrod has it's origins from the Comet 4 which was a very successful design. Had the MoD retained the concept of maintenance being kept within the RAF and not contracted out, I believe that this accident would not have occurred. Squadrons have an affinity to their individual aircraft, not unlike the Rover 75 owner, who will go that extra mile to prevent faults from developing into serious issues. Engineers / technicians understand this, accountants never will. |
