This morning during the rush hour, I was returning home at around 9.10, driving along a very busy duel carriageway, 40 mph limit, when approaching a junction on my left, I observed a transit type van waiting to join the dual carriageway. I was about 70/80 yards away from it, when the van suddenly pulled onto the dual carriageway, and headed HEADED TOWARDS ME IN THE OVERTAKING LANE. Luckily no one was overtaking me at around the normal 50/60 mph they travel at. Flashed lights and sounded horn pointed at driver trying to indicate that it was one way dual carriage, and all of a sudden realised what he had done and reversed back and turned into the road he had come out of looking frightened to death at what he had just gotten away with. Happy Christmas for those that wern’t about to have a head on crash with him.

Well done on your quick response. I had to do similar on the single-lane main road near me not so long ago - a car pulled out of the local filling station, turned right and drove in the same direction I was headed, only on the right-hand side of the road - obviously a tourist or similar. I slowed down alongside him for a moment, blasted the horn, gesticulated to get over onto the left side and accelerated away. As I reached the first bend in the road a few seconds later, I saw him move across - just as a car coming from the other direction flew past me. I'm in no doubt that the averted head-on collision would have led to at least a couple of fatalities.

These types of accident/near miss are becoming all too commonplace. The A17 and A47 in Norfolk, go from single to dual carriageway frequently and often lead to people overtaking into traffic. Take care folks. Fatigue can make your decision making a disaster.

Yea Lee,I do have it on camera. I am afraid that I am not a modern day technophobe to be able to post it up. I could not believe it when it happened. As I said,it is a 40mph area, but most come up there at around 50/60 mph. I have actually had some pass me at, I would estimate at around 80/90 mph. Heaven forbid if one of those had been coming, I would certainly have had to find out how to post it up and to the police. Still, it was lucky day for the van driver.

Same with the A9. Seen some real horrors and very close calls.

I had a near miss experience in Kendal the other day. On a one way system (2lane), turned the corner and found myself in the middle one of 3 lanes. A big sign showed 3 lanes, arrowed the direction I was going, 1 for turning left, 1 for straight on, and 1 for turning right. I needed the right lane, so moved into it. It was half dark, then after a couple of seconds, I realised that a car was coming straight towards me, through the traffic lights ahead, and flashing his headlights at me. I then realised there was a stream of cars behind him, and I was in the wrong lane! I was able to move back to the left, and immediately AFTER the lights, an arrow on the road, showed I could move into a lane to my right. I haven't been back since, but I'd swear the gantry sign did not indicate that there was an oncoming lane, nor that the right turn lane only started after the lights. I know of several places where signage and road markings are at best ambiguous and unhelpful, and at worst, downright misleading or dangerous.
