Worth a shot and cost free

Snagger.
On these diesels the camsensor is only referenced at start up, and then the ECM ignores it until the next time the engine is started.

I've checked the cam sensor, thinking about it, due to the location its bound to have oil on the sensor. I didn't notice though, that one wire was partially exposed. I've wrapped it with insulting tape - as Grandad used to say. It will have no bearing on the engine cutting out, but if does appear to have helped improve the starting. I'll know more tomorrow.

Clutching at straws here, but I guess you're at the stage of doing that now… after about 2 years of ownership, mine used to just suddenly cut out which, as you say, was disconcerting and potentially dangerous. I did various tests etc, all seeming OK… but somebody persuaded me to send the ECM to Brian. It’s a few years ago now, so can’t remember all the details, but he sent me an exchange unit by return of post after finding mine was faulty.

Although my plenum was bone dry, the ECM had a quite a tide mark both outside, and inside on the PCB. I forget what Brian said, but I think maybe it was that the lower bit of the PCB which dips in the water contains the control circuitry for fuel pressure or something. Although the plenum was dry now, it clearly hadn’t been at some stage prior to my ownership, and whatever corrosion had previously been caused was gradually deteriorating.

No problems since – you never know. I think you’ve had yours T4’d, but I don’t know enough to know if all faults like mine show up that way…

Hi Hogweed,

That is certainly worth considering. My plenum is dry & has been for the past couple of years, however, it has definitely flooded before. I'm not sure if I would prefer this to be the cause or not!

Guess it would be down to Phil really, if he's previously T4'd your motor - he's an expert, I'm not, and I'm sure he could say either it's definitely OK, or if there's room for doubt

Maybe worth checking with him.

Evening all,
Sadly I still have not resolved this issue
I've replaced. The UBP, fuel filter, pressure regulator O rings, weak injector & fuel rail sensor. The car starts easier now, but will still cut out intermittently under hard acceleration. I fitted the fuel rail sensor this afternoon & been for a drive. The engine cut out twice while accelerating hard up hill.
I think all that is left is the ITP (bearing in mind this will happen with a full tank) & the high pressure pump.
Anyone got any ideas? Oh, the plenum is dry (spy hole mod & joules plenum guard)
Thanks in advance,
Rob

I would say it would be worth checking for fault codes rather than trying even more solutions.

That's the problem, there hasn't been any fault coming code's - even when Phil connected up to the T4. Phil sat. In the drivers seat with his laptop, fully opened the throttle & could see the fuel pressure readings dropping, but no fault codes.

I have just replaced the HP pump regulator O rings again, just in case, & been for a spin. Unfortunately there has been no improvement. I did notice though, that prior to the engine cutting out, there was a, noticeable amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust. Would this imply over fuelling?
If so, what would that suggest?

Many thanks in advance,

Rob

Morning all,

just a quick update, I've not suffered any cutting out this week - but my trip to work is only a few miles! I do though, have starting issues, it takes ages to start. I replaced the Cam sensor last night with a genuine part but that made no difference. I also have a genuine crankshaft sensor & UBP to trial too. I'm hoping I will be able to send them back for a refund as I won't need them wishful thinking!

I presume I can rule out the ITP as both the cutting out & starting issue is very democratic. It acts on a full tank as well as a half full tank. Please say if you disagree.
Saturday while I replaced the O rings to the HP regulator I also checked the wiring to the fuel pump & cam sensor. The wiring for the fuel pump is damaged, not hugely but maybe enough to cause issues. I am hoping to visit a scrap yard next week to cut out the fuel pump loom so I can replace my damaged wiring. Fingers crossed this will cure the poor starting/cutting out.
I doubt it will be that easy though
With that in mind I have ordered a proper leak back kit so I can be 100% sure the injectors are ok.
