Default Strange Noise

I normaly drive with the radio on so I'm oblivious to any outside noise. Today I drove my better half up town and noticed a strange noise when the window was down.
When I got home and bonnet up I could hear it better.
It sounds like a thick tin with bolts in it being shaken about.
It starts when I turn the steering wheel both left and right.
It stops when the engine revs up a bit.
Any one any ideas?

No I've just changed them. The sound comes from the belts area.

Shot crank pulley. Have a look on Youtube and see if it sounds like yours.

what he said, starts/gets worse when you turn due to the increased load caused by the power steering being more heavily loaded. Mines doing the same, but I have a replacement, just need the time to change it.

Heard this on youtube as suggested

Ken this is the noise. What is it? What is involved to remedy it?

Driver side wheel off improves access a lot.

Loosen off the tensioner for the aux belts and remove them, slim 24mm spanner needed.

Then it's a single 22mm bolt holds the pulley on......IT IS VERY VERY TIGHT.....so an argos 3/8th set won't do, I'm using a 1" set for mine and hoping a jag on the starter with the bar jammed against the ground will be enough to loosen it. If not locking the engine and cursing a bit with a long scaffold pole as an extension will be involved

Refit in reverse order. The use of an air gun is handy and often moves the pulley nut easily enough if you are lucky enough to have one.

Get a quality pulley, cheap ones do not last, recommended make is Cortico, about £100 each

to test, with engine running spray some water at the pulley, if it quietens then it is likely on the way out, best change sooner rather than later as it can do more damage if it totally fails
