'Synthetic' oils are made from petroleum (alphaolefins), but provie more thermally stable and controllable properties. They provide the base fluid into which the various additives are mixed. The result is an oil which exceeds the primary ACEA performance specs set down for 75/ZT engines. In that sense they're perfectly suitable though depending on the premium paid, might be considered a luxury.

Well I only paid £40 for oil, filter and labour.
