Next time it could be your V8 !

Give him the Chance to sort it by going across and seeing him
If no joy or excuses or Denial
Report to Police straight away and also ask/demand a Crime number.
It is an offence and his Insurance premium will also go through the roof if convicted,
once a Crime number is also given to Insurance company with a brief statement from your wife, and photos of damage etc,
he is on a hiding to nothing.

I agree with Pab. The old goat needs taken down a peg or two. What he did was illegal. You have done absolutely nothing wrong and should not be one penny out of pocket. He drove off without so much as a second thought for your property. Up until then I would have been calm, as accidents happen and can be rectified. As soon as he moved off he forfeited the right to even the most basic politeness. Take the police to his doorstep if needs be.
Get him sorted Bernard, it'll only eat away at you if you don't do anything.

All the best

I'd first just pop over and say somethign like " I'm not sure if you noticed but you did damage my car when you reversed yesterday"

If he denies it go to the police and report it. Same with your insurance company.

Also go over to his car and take pictures of where your wife thinks the contact was. He may polish it out after you tell him that you know what he did.

If you are not confident enough then don't be confrontational about it.

I have had 2 very similar incidents in the last few years and it is surprisingly stressful.

If you can get his insurance details, you can deal directly with his insurer. They are unlikely to waste their time and money allowing him to dispute liability in such a clear cut case.

The first incident I had, the other driver's insurer arranged for their approved repairer to pick up my car and they sent a loan car. I didn't have to do or pay anything.

I woudn't waste time getting quotes for repairs yourself in the expectation that he will pay cash and avoid making an insurance claim. Each incident I had was a small dent but cost around £1000 a time.

If he is difficult, you can point out to him that it is an offence to refuse to provide insurance details to someone with reasonable cause to ask and that if he doesn't report the incident to his insurer himself it will invalidate his cover. That would lead to you making a claim on your insurance and your insurer would then sue him and he would be without cover.

Good luck

Thanks everyone for your advice and encouragement. I'll let you know what happens. The old so-and-so is nearly 90 so I'll have to be a bit circumspect I guess.

It is also an offence to drive away after an accident without stopping.

My father is 90 in a couple of weeks time. He has been driving regularly to see his girfriend every other week 50 miles each way. He is a perfectly capable driver and probably physically fitter than I am!
