It’s my turn this week. I’m off work Wednesday to Saturday so I’ll try the keyhole method. I’m also bypassing the oil cooler as I’ve been tipped off that it may be blocked. This may be causing a build up of pressure hence my last 3 thermostats failing. It’s only a theory but be a good idea.

Thanks. The pictures will be a great help. I’ve also spoken to Terry Shaw who has talked me through the process. He moved this week and is out of action when it comes to repairing MGR cars.
I will update with pictures as I progress. Tomorrow has been lost as my wife wants me to be her caddy!

Cool

Just received my metal thermostat, will be attempting this job myself.

It was mentioned to lube up the sealing O-rings before fitting ?

What should I use for that ? Oil? Grease ?

So according to this guide I need only remove the throttle body to gain access?

Can i reuse the hose clips? Or should I replace those with worm drive jubilee clips?

Cheers and thanks on advance!

You can use many things for lubricating the O-rings. The main thing is that you DO use something! A thick liquid soap, a grease like rubber grease, or even petroleum jelly (Vaseline).
The original hose clamps should never be used, and the clamps should be properly tightened!
good luck!

Hi Gareth,

The original spring steel hose clips are more difficult to remove and refit than worm drive 'Jubilee' clips but they have two advantages:
  1. The contact surface is completely smooth, eliminating damage to the hose.
  2. The force applied to the hose is fixed so you don't have to worry about under or over tightening.

My answer to your question is therefore yes, you can re-use the original hose clips. I have loads on my engine.

This is what I love (& hate) about this forum. Conflicting opinions lol

Perhaps a 3rd option? Aren't their some special jubilee clips avaliable that also have a smooth surface and place pressure on the hose more equally?

Are they similer to fuel pipe clips?

Also I think some of the higher quality turbo boost hose clips clamp down better too?

In this case, I have made the thermostat housings, I know what I talk about and I say you should not re-use the original clips in connection with my thermostat housing.
Really, really simple!

And if you have read my pdf, you should know that, it is clearly mentioned.

If you don't believe it, do what you feel is best!

What size were the clips I need?

Can't remember. Just in Halfords now

The pipes on the bigger diameter is 32mm, the smaller is 20.
Add 2 x 5mm of rubber and you are looking at about 40 to 42mm for the bigger clips and about 28 to 30mm for the small. So get clips that can span this comfortably.
I would however also replace the inlet manifold gaskets. I can almost guarantee they are leaking!
