Oil cooler
Hello all
My recent overheating probs have been traced to a failed oil cooler unit. Is there anyone in Yorkshire area who could come to York (where car is) and fit a replacement unit (which I will be sourcing)? Can't really afford to keep paying garage hourly rates to get the car fixed, so need an owner/enthusiast who has the skills (which I don't) to replace the unit for me at a more reasonable cost. Can anyone help? Thanks Andrew

Thankfully not a hard job at all - if I was closer I'd book the afternoon out and pop over myself.
BigRuss is near Huddersfield and may be able to help, but I'm not sure if he travels or not these days (it's been a while since I've spoken to him). We have the part you need here, and we've just dropped the price thanks to some pretty extensive negotiations with our supplier: https://www.dmgrs.co.uk/products/75-...-kv6-pbc000031

Your last reply to me was that you would recover your car from the garage and check two things I had recommended:
Have you done these? What were the results? The oil cooler can only cause overheating if it's physically blocked. That is caused by the unwise use of sealing products (such as K-Seal). You said in an earlier thread that you're not aware that any have been used. So we have two possibilities here. Either you've been misled and a sealing product has been used in which case you have a bigger problem on your hands. Just replacing the cooler is unlikely to solve the problem since such products are almost impossible to remove and continue to affect the operation of the thermostat. Alternatively the garage has misdiagnosed the fault. Simon

I have had quite a few v6 cars with Andrews symptoms and replacing the oil cooler has sorted it out for the cost of an oil cooler it seems an obvious to start with the simple things known to cause issues Dave |

Update
Car passed the 'demist' test.
I have had advice from different folks that its possibly the Oil cooler, or maybe the thermostat that is at fault. Are there any Yorkshire based specialists (or knowledgeable owners) that can come out to me in York (as I wouldn't want to risk driving it too far) to get a definitive diagnosis and fix the problem? I have been recommended to speak with Mobile MG Rover Mechanics in Derby, but am having difficulties making contact with them. Not sure what they'd charge to come out to York! I will source the parts, but I need to know what I need, so not wasting money on bits I don't actually need. I need my ZT back on the road Cheers Andrew

https://www.roughluckracing.com/ They're mobile but have a unit near York I believe. Or you could try Retro Sports Cars based in West Yorkshire, again, never used them myself. https://www.retrosportscars.co.uk/

You've raised the possibility of a thermostat fault and you've already said that the temperature is "all over the place". I asked for some evidence of this: Quote:

Overheated kv6 - not making progress
OK so my 'all over the place' comment was incorrect - car runs at normal temperature and then needle goes up to the top and the 'engine overheat' warning message comes on.
I have tried Rough Luck Racing, but unfortunately they only deal with 1.8 K series engines (and they are fully booked for months ahead anyway). I have contacted Mobile MG mechanics in Derby and waiting for pricings and availability, but considering they are 2 hours south of me in Derby, I wonder what the costs there would be. Chris Flanagan over in Brighouse is the go to person for MGR cars in the area, but he is an hour drive away and the car won't do that. Having googled vehicle transport services, a car transporter would cost £130 to get to Brighouse - which seems pricey to me (especially for a one-way journey). I am trying to find someone who knows/understands MGR cars and isn't as pricey as a high street garage It doesn't feel like I'm moving forward here! Andrew
